Brandt Gibson to Speak About Solving a “Non-Paternity” Event

The Second Life Chapter APG is pleased to present SL APG Chapter President Brandt Gibson as the speaker for the July 2018 chapter meeting. Brandt’s talk is titled “Finding Sally’s Father: Discovering and Solving a Non-Paternity Event.”

DNA testing revealed that Sally was not the biological daughter of her father. Further DNA testing and traditional genealogy research were able to identify her biological father.

About the Speaker

Brandt Gibson studied genealogy at Brigham Young University, where he earned a BA in Linguistics and a certificate in genealogy and family history. He did an internship at the Family History Library in Salt Lake City and graduated from the ProGen study group in 2011.

Brandt started his own professional genealogy business, The Generations Welder, in 2016, and is also a contract researcher for Legacy Tree Genealogists. He is currently serving as the president of the Second Life Chapter of the Association of Professional Genealogists, and secretary of the Alexander Hamilton chapter of the WA State Society, Sons of the American Revolution.

Elizabeth O’Neal to Discuss Online Lineage Society Resources

The Second Life Chapter APG is pleased to present Elizabeth O’Neal (a.k.a. Ellington Sweeney) as the speaker for the January 2018 chapter meeting. Elizabeth will discuss “Finding Free Online Resources from Lineage Societies.”

Lineage societies have been collecting and preserving family histories for more than 125 years. But did you know that some of these resources can be found for free online? And you don’t even have to be a member to take advantage of them!

Thousands of applications and supporting documents have been submitted to lineage societies over the years, and your brick wall ancestor could be hiding in the file of one of their members. From the databases and downloadable documents of the DAR, to simple lists of pioneers and soldiers: this presentation will show you which gems are available online and where to find them. By the time we are finished, you just might be inspired to join!

Elizabeth O’Neal is a professional genealogist, writer, and educator who has been researching her family history for more than three decades. She is a member of numerous lineage societies, including the Daughters of the American Revolution, and is an avid promoter of their genealogical resources.

Lara Diamond to Discuss the Frustrations of Endogamy

The Second Life Chapter APG is pleased to present Lara Diamond as the speaker for the May 2017 chapter meeting. Lara will talk about “Real-World Examples of the Frustrations of Endogamy.”

According to the International Society of Genetic Genealogy (ISOGG) Wiki, “Endogamy is the practice of marrying within the same ethnic, cultural, social, religious or tribal group. In endogamous populations everyone will descend from the same small gene pool. People will be related to each other in a recent genealogical timeframe on multiple ancestral pathways and the same ancestors will, therefore, appear in many different places on their pedigree chart.” Could endogamy be affecting your genetic genealogy research?

About Lara Diamond

Lara Diamond is President of the Jewish Genealogy Society of Maryland and has been researching her family for 25 years. She has traced all branches of her family back to Europe and most multiple generations back in Europe using Russian Empire-era and Austria-Hungarian Empire records. Most of her research is in modern-day Ukraine, with a smattering of Belarus and Poland. She recently took over running JewishGen’s Subcarpathia SIG and also runs several town-focused projects to collect documentation to assist all those researching ancestors from common towns.
